Services Glossary
Consultation
Brief (15-20 minute) phone or email conversation offered to parents free of charge to help families decide if their child is in need of speech, language, or feeding therapy.

Evaluation
Longer (typically 2 hours), formal, standardized assessment of all areas of speech and language skills including; speech, language, oral motor, fluency, voice, resonance, pragmatic, and feeding skills. Will typically consist of at least 2 standardized tests that will give standard scores and age-equivalents. Treatment plans and goals will be determined from evaluation.

Treatment
Typically 30-45 minute sessions 1 or 2 times per week targeting up to 5 goals based on results of evaluation. Sessions are all play based, and tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient and family. Duration of therapy is dependent on patient’s progress on goals and follow through on home program materials. Average length of time in speech therapy ranges from 3-6 months

Greater Decatur Speech Therapy offers a wide variety of services for children birth to age 18. All families can expect weekly communication with your therapist regarding their child’s progress in therapy, updates on goals, and home program activities.

Specialized Experience
Greater Decatur Speech Therapy has extensive experience with medically fragile children who have complex medical needs including tube feeding, supplemental oxygen requirements, cardiac conditions, pediatric cancers, prematurity, traumatic brain injury, seizure/other neurological disorders, failure to thrive, dysphagia, and tracheostomy/ventilator dependence. If your child has frequent hospitalizations due to a complex medical history, they are at risk for delays in speech, language, and feeding development.
